Literature, Nature and Music - A Library's Mission to Support Outdoor Programming

Making the most of its beautiful and large front garden, Hendrick Hudson Free Library decided to increase its outdoor programming, starting with music!

Built in 1997, this new and modern library provides a range of services. From EV charging stations to recycling initiatives, the library focuses on sustainability and recently wanted to make the most of its unused outdoor space and connect the library with its natural surroundings.

Located in Montrose, New York, the library first created a water garden, where excess rainwater from the building's roof filtered down to the garden. Jill Davis, the library's director, wanted to create specific outdoor programs for the garden and decided that music was the answer.

She decided to open the space up to its patrons and encourage music-making after discovering Percussion Play and its instruments. When deciding on the instruments, they installed the Penta Post, Rainbow Bongos, and Sunflower Drum – adding color to the garden. Shortly after, the library sought to honor a local father and daughter with a memorial. Both enjoyed music and with a donation from the family, the library added the Rainbow Cavatina to the “music garden.”

Jill says, “It’s marvelous to see the instruments being enjoyed by our patrons. It’s a real draw for people to go outside on our front lawn and enjoy the space. The instruments sound calming and create a welcoming atmosphere. They’re really being enjoyed by both young and old and have given us an opportunity to create outdoor programs.”

The library was keen to bring literature and books into the space and has now created programs that encourage children to listen to stories related to music. Jill says, “Our outdoor music programs have been terrific for us and really bring together music, literature, and our natural world. We can’t wait to include more instruments and expand our programming!”
